Tracking by bill of lading: when it works better than the container number

Most people reach for the container number by default. For a shipment with six containers on one bill, that is six searches when one would do.

When it is the better reference

Three situations. Multi container shipments, where the bill returns everything at once. Early stage bookings, where containers may not be allocated yet. And customer communication, because the bill of lading is the reference your customer already has on their paperwork.

The house bill trap

If a forwarder or NVOCC arranged your shipment, the bill of lading in your hand is probably a house bill. The carrier never issued it and has no record of it. Typing it into a carrier system returns nothing, correctly, and people conclude the tracking is broken.

Ask your forwarder for the master bill number or the container numbers. Either one reaches carrier data.

Format differences

Unlike container numbers, bill of lading formats are not standardised. Each carrier has its own pattern, some with a carrier prefix, some without, some with the port pair encoded. This means a validity check is impossible in the way it is for container numbers, and a failed search does not tell you whether the number is wrong or simply not published yet.

When in doubt, try both references. It costs nothing and it resolves most cases in seconds.
